As Josh posted for myself and Erika earlier, at about 11:40am this morning we
had a Juv. Golden-crowned Sparrow sitting in a tree branch no more than 15 feet
away from us with an Adult White-crowned Sparrow and a Juv. White-crowned
Sparrow on the other side of it. The bird remained for roughly a minute from
when it was initially spotted and despite several people searching the woodlot
it was not relocated. The bird was also seen by 2 other visitors at Old Cut
which I did not catch their names and would appreciate if they sent me a
message so we can put their names down for records sake.
Also I'm sure many people have noticed the Cave Swallow movement throughout
Ontario. At Old Cut today we tallied up 119 birds flying in off the Inner Bay
and heading westward. Some of the Cave Swallows were flying low and circling
around later in the day providing good looks to several lucky viewers. There
were also a few Cliff Swallows and a Northern Rough-winged Swallow in the mix
as well.
All considering today was an excellent day at Old Cut with 50 to 60 species
seen and highlights including:
Crossbill Sp. (probably a Red by call just heard distantly)
White-eyed Vireo which has been seen for a few days now
5 Tundra Swans
and all the usuals!!!
Good birding,

OLD CUT WOODS AT LONG POINT
Old Cut Woods at Long Point is southwest of Hamilton, directly south of Port
Rowan. To reach it you can drive south on Hwy 6 from Hamilton, passing through
Hagersville and turning right, west in Jarvis onto Hwy 3, drive to Simcoe and
turn left, south on Hwy 24 and follow this to Hwy 59, ( it curves to the west
south of town) turn left, south on Hwy 59 and drive right down about 8 km and
past the golf coarse and you will be on the causeway (Long Point Rd).
Drive on across the bridge and continue past the marina on your left. The road
comes to Lake Erie where it curves to the left (Erie Blvd) through the cottage
/ retail business area. Continue driving until you come to Old Cut Road. Turn
left and drive a couple of hundred yards down this road (you will see the
entrance to the banding area on your right) this is the entrance to Old Cut
Woods. Drive another 100 feet or so and you will see a parking area on your
left. Park here and walk across the road to the woods.
