The 59th Peterborough Christmas Bird Count was held on Sunday, December 19.
A total of 54 species (average 51) and 11,341 individuals were counted. Of particular interest were the 737 Bohemian Waxwings found in 7 of our 9 areas. We had our first Lesser Scaup since 1974. A Wilson's Snipe was found in one of the small streams flowing through the city. Gull have virtually disappeared from the count area with only 8 Ring-billed Gulls, and 22 Herring Gulls - our ten year average is over 500 combined gulls. Only 2 Ruffed Grouse is our lowest since 1968. Finches - Pine Grosbeak 2, Purple Finch 4, House Finch 175, White-winged Crossbill 2, Common Redpoll 20, Pine Siskin 4, American Goldfinch 736.
