Hey Birders,
The Varied Thrush is still actively coming to the feeders of Elmer and Bev
Ewert. They live at 3218 Weimar Line. The bird looked pretty cold this morning,
a few times sitting on the ground puffed up, trying to keep its toes warm.
On Saturday, my Dad Jim and I did some scouting for a tour of the area and had
a few intersting sightings; immature Northern Goshawk hunting the ducks at the
Conestoga Dam, male Merlin in the town of Linwood. The Red-shouldered Hawk is
still kicking around in Hawkesville. There's also a drake Gadwall and American
Wigeon wintering on the Conestoga River at the dam and a first-winter
White-crowned Sparrow coming to a feeder in the town of Glen Allan.
Interestingly yesterday we observed 2 dark morph Rough-legged Hawk's kettling
high up and disappearing to the south. We figured they were 'migrating' as a
response to the extreme cold. Any thoughts/comments? I've often noticed after
an extreme cold snap in the winter, hawk numbers drop off for abit.
Directions for the Varied Thrush: exit the 401 at Hwy 8 north, take Hwy 85
north, towards Waterloo about 12km. Exit Northfield Road, and go west.
Following Northfield, turn right (north) onto Weber street. Take Weber st.
about a km and turn left onto Benjamin Road. Take Benjamin all the way to
Kressler Road (~5km). At Kressler, turn left and take this to the first road
(about 2km), which is Weimar Line. Turn right onto Weimar and the house is the
3rd on the left #3218.
For directions to the other birds I mentioned, please email me privately.
Good Birding,
