Hello birders, This past weekend Mira Furgoch and I birded the Kingston area with some nice sightings throughout:
Amherst Island: The Northern Hawk Owl continues to be seen near 3600 South Shore Road. Several Short-eared Owls this evening around the KFN property. 2 Barred Owls in the Owl Woods. A Northern Flicker flew by along the road to the Owl Woods. A Red-bellied Woodpecker near the feeders in the Owl Woods. ~125 Common Redpolls with at least 1 Hoary Redpoll found on the KFN property this afternoon. Snow Buntings and Horned Larks were seen as well. Elsewhere: We found an adult Glaucous Gull with a group of gulls near the Wolfe Island ferry dock (on the Kingston side) along with 2 Iceland Gulls. Several waterfowl continue to be seen at Dupont Lagoons including American Wigeon, Hooded Merganser and Ring-necked Ducks. We also saw the Barrow's Goldeneye at Presqu'ile Provincial Park on Saturday morning along with a Red-bellied Woodpecker at the feeders next to the bird sightings board. Photos at my blog (see link below). good luck, Alvan Buckley Toronto, ON www.alvanbuckley.com/blog.html Directions: Directions To Amherst Island (copied from Bruce Ripley)- Ontario Road Atlas, MapArt Publishing [Pg. 36, E54 & E55] Located 18 km. west of Kingston. Exit off Hwy. 401 at exit 593 (County Rd. 4, Camden East) and drive south to the very end (Millhaven). Turn right on Hwy. 33 and drive 100 metres until you see the sign for the Amherst Island ferry. The ferry (20 minute trip) leaves the mainland on the half hour and leaves the island on the hour. Cost is $8.00 Canadian round trip. There are no gas stations on the island. There are restrooms on the ferry, and at the island ferry dock. Presqu'ile Provincial Park (copied from Fred Helleiner): To reach Presqu'ile Provincial Park, follow the signs from Brighton. Locations within the Park are shown on a map at the back of a tabloid that is available at the Park gate. The narrow channel between Owen Point and Gull Island is now ice-covered most of the time, but the ice, while appearing to be thick, might not support the weight of a human. However, the water beneath the crust, if there is any, is only ankle-deep. The surrounding shoreline can be very slippery. Birders are encouraged to record their observations on the bird sightings board provided near the campground office by The Friends of Presqu'ile Park and to fill out a rare bird report for species not listed there. _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
