Hi folks,

Thanks to Gordon Pringle for posting our observation this morning, based on what we told him on the phone. We subsequently realize that we should not have said "intermediate" plumage, just "juvenile". Apologies for any confusion this may have created.

We had excellent looks at the bird for 10 minutes, through binoculars and scope as it chased the (few) Ring-billed Gulls that were present. It passed several times, closest distance was 40 meters from where we were standing on "Ottawa Beach". There were no rufous tones in the plumage, it appeared quite greyish-brown overall with crisp feather emargination and barring on the underparts. A bulky bird with a heavy bill and tiny rounded cental rectrices. The bird took off at 9:40 AM, flying rapidly NW over the river into the brisk NW wind.

The last time a Pomarine Jaeger was reported in Ottawa, was from the same location on 30 Sept. 2006.

Unusual that 2 spp. of jaegers have been seen in the same week in the same location (and in Ottawa!), and it's early for Pomarine to show up here. Ironic that yesterday (14 Sept.) "Ottawa Beach" was full of photographers, whereas today there was nobody while we were there.

Enjoy the season!

Subject: [Ontbirds] Pomarine Jaeger Ottawa Beach

A juvenile intermediate Pomarine Jaeger was found by Bob Bracken and Chris Lewis at Ottawa Beach (Andrew Haydon Park) at 9:30 this morning, harassing Gulls, then moved off North West in the direction of Shirley's Bay.

Directions from Neily World (http://www.neilyworld.com/neilyworld/birdguide.htm): From Highway 417 (The Queensway) take exit 129 (Greenbank & Pinecrest Roads). If travelling west, the 0.3 km offramp dumps you right or north onto Pinecrest Road. If driving east, a 0.3 km offramp brings you to Pinecrest/Greenbank Road, where you will turn left or north onto Pinecrest Road and in 0.4 km join the westbound offramp traffic. Both groups will now follow Pinecrest Road north 1.0 km from here to Carling Avenue. Turn left or west on Carling and go 1.7 km to the turnoff for the parking lot for Ottawa Beach on the right or north. Turn right into the lot.
