Point Pelee National Park Migration Update for: May 7, 2012

Rain, coupled with thunder and lightning, greeted birders this morning.
Despite the inclement weather, there was an increase in the amount of bird
song compared to the day before.

As of 11:15 a.m. 22 species of warblers have been reported from various
locations within the Park. Of these, the most noteworthy was a LOUISIANA
WATERTHRUSH and HOODED WARBLER along Woodland Nature Trail, and another
HOODED WARBLER in Tilden Woods. Other warblers being reported included a
few CAPE MAY WARBLERS, CANADA WARBLER, WILSLON’S WARBLER, BAY-BREASTED
WARBLER and NORTHERN PARULA. More common warbler species include: NASHVILLE
WARBLER, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER and BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER.

Also drawing interest was the AMERICAN BITTERN found perched in a tree in
the Tip Train Loop. Slightly further south, a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW gave
good views as it sheltered under a Red Cedar tree. This was likely the same
bird reported there yesterday afternoon. As people were watching it, a
LINCOLN’S SPARROW sang from a nearby brush pile to cheer the mood of those
present. A MARSH WREN was also observed working the rocks and bushes just
north of the Tip.

The LARK SPARROW reported as late as 7:30 p.m. last night, has not yet been
reported today. There have also been no reports of the female SUMMER
TANAGER.

If the rain begins to let off a little bit this afternoon, we expect bird
and bird-watching activity to pick up in response.

***Also please note, all birding hikes run rain or shine. However, when
lightning is threatening nearby some delays may occur.***

Good Birding,

Hike Leaders: Pete, Karl, Todd, Justin, John, Ellen, and Alvan
