The Red-necked Grebe nest at Bronte Harbour has one hatchling as of this evening. Sue observed a hatchling in the water this afternoon. There are five eggs in the nest. On June 10 there were seven eggs. This the first Red-necked Grebe hatching that we have observed in Bronte since 2009. In the last two years the eggs disappeared from the nests. For any photographers who may be interested I have good news and bad news. The good news is that the floating tire on which the nest is situated is closer to land than in most years. The bad news is that it is not a natural looking nest; the birds have not decorated the tire with vegetation to make it look nicer.
There are many Cliff Swallow nests on the nearby washroom building and Compass Restaurant. We saw another Red-necked Grebe on a tire in Bronte Creek opposite OCs at Stoneboats restaurant on Bronte Road. The bird was disturbed by a passing boat and no eggs were observed. Directions: Exit the QEW at Bronte Rd. (Oakville) and go to the lake. The grebe nest is just east of Compass Restaurant on Ontario Street. This area is served by Oakville Transit routes 2 and 14 from the Bronte and Oakville GO Train stations respectively.
