Hi,
Today (Sept 28) I saw a Common Raven soaring over Point Pelee, south of the
Visitor Centre. It was first noticed as it was calling at regular intervals
although the first two times I heard it call, it sounded like someone shouting
in the distance. After about the third call I suspected it must be a raven and
a quick search of the sky turned it up. I was with Kevin McLaughlin at the time
and he was quite excited as it was new for his Pelee list. As Kevin has been
going to Pelee annually for 39 years, this highlights the fact that raven is a
rare bird at Point Pelee.
There was a good hawk flight today. Lots of accipiters, Redtails, Turkey
Vultures and a few Cooper's Hawks. The number of Blue Jays was incredible and a
treat to witness. The only other notable sighting was a Clay-colored Sparrow on
the West Beach south of the Visitor Centre.
