Chip & Lisa, regular visitors from Cochester, brought their daughter Chelsea with them today. Thanks to Mike Malone for picking up the high birds out over the lake, and to Claude Radley for picking up the late afternoon migrants. Weather: Mostly clear skies all day with winds primarly out of the north at 5 - 15 km/hr. Barometric pressure increased throughout the day from 30.09 (in/Hg) to 30.21 (in/Hg). Raptor Observations: 162 birds of 9 Species. It was a very slow start with no raptors at all in the first 3 hours despite what seemed like perfect weather conditions. When they finally did start to migrate they were very high in the sky. The anticipated Broad-wing Hawk numbers did not start until late in the day with the majority seen in the last 2 hours of the count. Non-raptor Observations: Cedar Waxwings dominated the non-raptor migration again today at 171 birds. Other highlights include: 1 Green Heron; 18 Chimney Swift; 1 Eastern Wood Pe-Wee; 12 species of warbler including the first Nashvilles; and, 61 American Goldfinch. 3 Monarch Butterflies. Predictions: Sunny in the a.m. and clouding up in the p.m. Temperature ranging from 9-21C. The predicted north-east winds of 5-12 km/hr should be good for migration. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Todd Pepper (pepper_t...@yahoo.ca) Holiday Beach Conservation Area information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
