Weather: It started off a little chilly at 8C but turned into a nice day with a high of almost 20C. The winds started out of the north, then shifted south, and finally south-east generally in the 5 - 10 km/hr range. The cloudless skies in the afternoon made it difficult to locate the very high flying raptors. Raptor Observations: Not quite as hectic as yesterday, but a good day at 4,573 birds of 12 species. An early morning rush of 3,855 Broad-winged hawks between 0900 and 1000 showed promise, but it quickly faded with the shift in the winds and the day total ended at 4,189. It was another good Bald Eagle day with 15 birds of various ages with most of them up at the cloud limit. The mid-day Peregrine that came in strafe the plastic owl was one of 3 observed today. Non-raptor Observations: It was not a big non-raptor migration day today either. Chimney Swifts and Ruby-throated Hummingbirds had good numbers at 5 and 22 respectively. Just 1 Blue Jay today, so the big flight of them may be delayed this year. Nine Eastern Bluebird were the first for the count season. Cedar Waxwing maintained their position with the highest number of migrants so far with another 19 birds. Six Monarchs flew by today. Predictions: The Wednesday forecast includes temperatures ranging from 14 - 23C; mostly sunny; and winds out of the SE in the a.m. shifting to the S in the p.m. from 10 - 15 km/hr. The morning could be slow for raptors with the SE winds, but should improve as the winds shift to the south. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Todd Pepper (pepper_t...@yahoo.ca) Holiday Beach Conservation Area information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
