Thanks to everyone who helped with observing and counting today. Weather: Not the best winds today moderate from the E and then swinging round to the SSE. Temp still fairly warm to a high of 22C. Too much humidity to start the day with some actual fog hanging in till mid-morning then clearing with haze to the north. Raptor Observations: A total of 128 birds today...mostly TVs (91)...along with N. Harrier (6), Sharpies (22), a single Redtail, Kestrels (4) and the highlights of the day....early on a young Goshawk that was spotted traversing the field that appeared to be hunting...and also 3 Peregrines... the last one which passed just to the south of the observation knoll and provided observers great views! Non-raptor Observations: Observers noted less action today from non-raptor species. Only 2 Warblers were reported: American Redstart and Blackpoll. Both species of Kinglet were seen close to Sharpie Alley along with Black-capped Chickadee, Dark-eyed Junco, White-breasted Nuthatch, American Robin and American Goldfinch above the shrubs plus Swainson's Thrush and several Gray Catbirds lower down. Blue Jays called throughout the morning; about 200 were seen flying westward in the first couple of hours, but later many were seen returning to the treeline on the east side of the field. Spotted from the knoll were Red-bellied and Downy Woodpecker (directly above the knoll), Pileated Woodpecker and several Northern Flickers, both species seen flying across the field. An Eastern Phoebe and a few Cedar Waxwings were spotted nearby and 2 Song Sparrows were lurking in the shrubs just north of the knoll. Many dragonflies were seen today, mostly Black Saddlebags and Green Darners which, like the birds were mainly just flying back and forth. Others spotted were Meadowhawks, a single Red Saddlebags and a Shadow Darner. Monarch Butterflies were on the move again today; numerous Orange Sulphurs and Cabbage Whites were seen in the field and along the roadsides plus a few Eastern Tailed Blue, mainly in laneways near Sharpie Alley. Predictions: The next couple of days could be interesting with SW winds predicted....though a bit light. SW winds at this point in the season can bring decent Peregrine flights along the Cliff. Let's hope it works out that way. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Dave Brown (thebro...@ezlink.on.ca) Hawk Cliff Hawkwatch information may be found at: http://www.ezlink.on.ca/~thebrowns/HawkCliff/index.htm _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
