Ontbirders, This morning while birding the Saltfleet concessions on Stoney Creek Mountain, Lisa Teskey pointed out a bird to me which we quickly identified as a Dark morph Red-tailed Hawk. After circulating flight photos and some of the bird perched, that seems to be the consensus, and so with that, I make the post here (I posted it previously to Hamilton Birders).
Lisa first saw the bird perched on a woodlot edge(east side) directly behind the house marked with green marker 1267 Ridge Road E, at the intersection with 10th Rd E. I scoped it for a time and also took some photos. We watched it for about ten minutes before it began hunting in the small open clearing directly east of this house. This was well before noon today. At 4:20 PM, we returned to the scene, and easily re-found the bird in the field behind house marked 1281 Ridge Road E. We took some more photos and around 4:30, the bird flew back west towards 1267. Directions: The bird was seen both times on the north side of Ridge Road E, in fields behind houses marked 1267-1281. This is a decent sized area and would be the equivalent of maybe a city block. Viewing is from Ridge Road, please respect private property. QEW Niagara, exit 50 Road, turn right and travel south on 50 road and it will take you up the escarpment. Turn right and head west once you get up the escarpment at the intersection of Ridge Road and 50. Travelling west on Ridge Road, look for the bird on the north side of Ridge Road until you hit 10th Road E. 1267-1281 green markers and all areas around and between. Good luck.
