Arriving at Colonel Sam Park about 5:15 P.M. today, we didn't at first see the YCNH from the viewing platform. My Dad and I started walking around, and bumped into a birder who showed us what he said was the Yellow-crowned Night Heron. Only problem was, it was a Black-crowned Night Heron (juvenile). So if anyone who has not yet seen a Yellow-crowned Night Heron before heads out to see this one, don't automatically assume a person who shows you "the bird" is correct in their identification.
Around 6 P.M. we returned to the viewing platform, and saw the real YCNH as it walked around on a log directly in front of the platform. It gave spectacular views, showing clearly its larger, fatter, all dark bill, darker overall colouration and much smaller spots on the back and wings. Mark Kubisz, Scarborough, ON Colonel Sam Park is at the base of Kipling Ave. in Etobicoke. The pond with the viewing platform is just east of the most southern, free parking lot. _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
