Visitors:
We had a fantastic mix of visitors checking out the tower during Hawk Fest
today, from birders to photographers to families. A special thanks go out
to 2 of our visitors, John and Jenn Mills, who spent the entire day up on
the tower and were a great help in spotting far-off raptors.
Weather:
A very calm day with approximately 5km/h winds switching to the SSW after 5
hours of coming from the N-NE. A cool (9C) morning warmed up to 20C,
turning into a beautiful day.
Raptor Observations:
Cooler temperatures this morning led to a slow start for raptors flying.
Sharp-shinned Hawks began to show themselves after the temperature rose a
few degrees and were shortly followed by small kettles of Broad-winged
Hawks. Most were flying at quite a distance so it was a treat to have a
Northern Harrier every once in a while since they tended to be closer to
the tower. A good mix of 10 species flew through with a total of 668
raptors.
Non-raptor Observations:
An Eastern Whip-poor-will was heard early this morning and after sunrise,
warblers and other passerines were pretty abundant in the trees and bushes
around the tower. Some species seen were Common Yellowthroat, Tennessee,
Magnolia, Chestnut-sided and Canada Warblers along with 2 Common Nighthawks
and 3 R-Throated Hummingbirds. 5 Monarchs.

Predictions:
A cool morning with winds at 10-15km/h from the SW and a chance of showers.
