Weather: It was good weather for watching today with temperatures rising to the mid-20C and a few clouds scattered through the sky, but not great for birds flying. Unfortunately, the wind switched from the N in the morning to a S component after 3.5 hours. Raptor Observations: A fairly slow day for raptors today so most of the excitement was with non-raptors (see large paragraph below). 109 Sharp-shinned Hawks and 57 Turkey Vultures made an appearance along with 2 Bald Eagles, 3 Harriers, 7 Cooper's Hawks, 3 Red-Tails and 15 Kestrels. Non-raptor Observations: Someone once told me that there'd be a day when Blue Jays would fly from over the tree line like the words during the opening credits of Star Wars. They failed to mention that these "opening credits" would last for hours! Though not as many as yesterday, blue jays totalled 21690 with over half of them going by within the first 1.5 hours of counting. 39 Killdeer were also seen and our first Ruby-crowned Kinglet of the season seen at the tower! Another bird of interest was a Catbird with a deformed bill who had been banded in the park a couple weeks back. This bird was seen feeding and hopping around in the low vegetation. Nice to see it's doing well! Monarchs had a good day with 67. See today's eBird list http://ebird.org/ebird/canada/view/checklist?subID=S19984364 Predictions: Winds from the NW and N all day with some showers in the morning and partial cloud-cover. Sounds like the sort of weather than Sharp-shins and falcons might like! ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jenna McDermott (jmcde...@mail.uoguelph.ca) Holiday Beach Conservation Area information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
