Birders,
Today marks the first day of winter listing - the period of time running from
December 1 to February 28. I will be compiling the Ontario winter bird list
this winter, the results which can be seen at http://tinyurl.com/myyulvs. Links
to other Canadian provinces and regions can be found at Blake Maybank's Site:
http://www3.ns.sympatico.ca/maybank/other/nswinter.htm.
Approximately 340 species have been recorded during the winter in Ontario, with
around 200 species recorded each winter. Last season, 195 species were recorded
during the winter period, the lowest in four winters and slightly below the
seven year average of 198 species. Some of the highlights from last winter
included borealis Common Eider, Thick-billed Murre, Anna's Hummingbird, Clark's
Nutcracker, Spotted Towhee and Gray-crowned Rosy-finch. Just post your
sightings to Ontbirds, ebird.org or send me an email, and I will update the
list accordingly and provide an update to Ontbirds every month or so. That way
you can check the list and inform me of any species that have been seen but are
not present on the list.
Enjoy the winter birding season!
