JUNE 6, 2015 (SATURDAY) LANARK COUNTY
Leader: Ken Allison There were 5 participants on this year's trip that focused primarily on Pakenham Mountain. We started beside the Mississippi River at the historic stone bridge in Pakenham. We spent about 3 hours hiking in Concession 9 of Pakenham which ends in a very long unmaintained road through mostly forested habitat, but with some small hay fields, alder swamps and beaver ponds. Then we drove in the Carbine Road briefly. Our group found 60 species altogether. In the forested areas especially, the tall trees and dense leaves reduced many birds to "heard only". However, highlights included great looks in full sun at several Indigo Buntings, Chestnut-sided Warblers, Magnolia Warbler, Scarlet Tanager and Eastern Bluebird. We were almost attacked by a female Ruffed Grouse defending very young chicks. Two Broad-winged Hawks were seen, including a very scruffy-looking first year bird in very faded plumage. After the rain yesterday, the weather was very sunny this morning. It was only about 6° C when we headed out, with a breeze, which kept all the participants in jackets, but also reduced the numbers of mosquitos and deer flies which can be a problem on the Shield. Thanks to all who participated in this trip - it was a fun group!
