But unlike yesterday, so did a heaping helping of haze, which limited visibility considerably. A smidgen of cirrus crept into view by late morning, spreading across the sky as the afternoon progressed. Unseasonably warm once again, the consistently high humidity led to the haze sticking around for the duration of the count. The wind was light and out of the south early, shifting east in the afternoon. Raptor Observations: South wind led to a frustrating flight line today. By late morning, buteos began crossing well to our north, already difficult to pick out in the haze. From there, the flight line only extended northward. And by mid-afternoon, the only buteos to be seen were mere specks miles out, flickering in and out of the haze. Sympathetic to our troubles, sharpies and harriers crossed much closer, occasionally providing us with some decent looks. Non-raptor Observations: American Crow (4700+), Blue Jay (30+), Cedar Waxwing (55+), Common Grackle (7), Red-winged Blackbird (600+), Rusty Blackbird (30+), American Goldfinch (140+), Pine Siskin (15+), Horned Lark (20+), Tree Swallow (2), Monarch (2) Predictions: Sunny with warm temps and light south wind. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jonathan Stein ([email protected]) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org Site Description: The Detroit River Hawk Watch (a joint venture of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge and its Friends group, the International Wildlife Refuge Alliance) is the Boat Launch at Lake Erie Metropark located approximately 20 miles south of Detroit, Michigan.
