A flock of Greater Snow Geese continues to make daily trips north from the St. Lawrence River to a flooded area south of Green Valley along Cty Rd 34. The birds likely roost overnight on the river east of Lancaster near Westley's Point and head up in the morning after 8-8:30 to feed along the flooded Riviere Beaudette. On two days there were about 8000+ present but in each case the birds were spooked by something and moved off. They usually disperse to an area about 1/2 km to the east but may move further east along Riviere Beaudete.
Today's interruption, minutes after I arrived was thanks to an adult Golden Eagle that soared past not far overhead. After retreating east the flock returned to the river off Westley's Point. The combined flock on the water was about 15,0000 birds. The extensive ice that was present near shore two days ago is now completely gone. The birds are visible at a distance. Brian Morin Directions: Take exit #814 off Hwy 401 for Lancaster and head north along Cty Rd 34 for about 15 km. Westley's Point is 5 km east of South Lancaster along South Service Rd. _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
