Hi Ontbirders, Southbound shorebird migration is well underway. Today, July 10, I had a total of 14 species and highlights included an early adult Red-necked Phalarope at St. Isidore Sewage Lagoon, adult Stilt Sandpiper at Alfred Sewage Lagoon and a total of 19 adult Short-billed Dowitchers at various sites. Overall I recorded 700+ shorebirds including 170+ Lesser Yellowlegs and 450+ Least Sandpipers. My highest individual count was 210 Least Sandpipers at Alfred SL and 62 Lesser Yellowlegs at Embrun SL. Most sites had a bit of habitat but Alfred was the best with the west cell almost empty.
Other birds of note included 5 Snow Geese at St. Isidore and 4 Ruddy Ducks at St. Albert. Good birding, Bruce Bruce Di Labio Carp,Ontario 613-715-2571 DIRECTIONS: From the town of Alfred go east on Highway 17, then turn south on Peat Moss Road and drive for 2 km. The lagoons are on your left (east side of road). The birds are best observed from the viewing tower. Access to the viewing tower is free and no permit is needed.
