Kingston Field Naturalists (KFN) maintains records in a 50km radius of MacDonald Park, Kingston. Birders using eBird are encouraged to share their sightings with 'Kingston FN'. Highlights: With generally milder temperatures this week, some of the waterways have opened up a little. Much of the snow has also melted though a fresh dumping of earlier in the week topped that up again. As last week, this is just a quick summary of some of the highlights. Here's hoping 2017 brings you lots of birds! GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE - A single bird was seen at Millhaven on 25th. SNOW GOOSE - 5 birds were seen on the Napanee CBC on 27th; a good location to try is the waterfront from Bath to Millhaven and just inland from there. CACKLING GOOSE - 9 birds were recorded on the Napanee CBC held on 27th, with 6 of them seen at Finkle's Shore, Bath. HARLEQUIN DUCK - 2 females were refound on 24th at Beechgrove Complex, and then seen daily from that general area from 28th onwards. WOOD DUCK - a male continues to be seen at Napanee Springside Park, Napanee. PIED-BILLED GREBE - 1 was seen at Collin's Bay, Kingston on 24th and 30th. HORNED GREBE - 1 on the south shore of Amherst Island on 30th. TURKEY VULTURE - A Christmas Day special for a couple of visitors to Amherst Island on 25th. GOLDEN EAGLE - an immature bird was seen near Charleston Lake Provincial Park on 25th. LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL - an adult was seen at Doug Fluhrer Park on 30th. ICELAND GULL - 1 was seen at Bath on 28th. GLAUCOUS GULL - 1 at Joyceville waste facility on 28th; 2 others at Bath the same day. SNOWY OWL - a small arrival of birds over the last couple of weeks with 1 observer tallying 15 on 28th. YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER - a single continuing bird was seen near Washburn on 30th. TUFTED TITMOUSE - birds continue at Millen Bay, NY (2) and Gananoque (1). GREY CATBIRD - a great winter find (on Christmas Day) of a single bird at Balsam Grove, Kingston. SWAMP SPARROW - 2 on Howe Island on 24th and 1 at Martin Edwards Reserve, Amherst Island on 30th. RUSTY BLACKBIRD - 1 was seen (continuing) near McIntyre on 27th in the company of 8 RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS (also seen on 24th). In order to minimise disturbance to wildlife and property, Kingston Field Naturalists has adopted the KFN Sensitive Sightings Policy. Also note that, as requested by the landowners, sightings of owls at the privately-owned Owl Woods must not be shared on the Internet (this includes posting as 'Amherst Island' on eBird) by KFN or anyone who visits. To ensure continued access to this location, please respect their wishes and follow the guidelines posted on-site. To maintain records for conservation purposes, sightings from that location are welcomed through all the traditional channels.
