High winds from the East that soon brought driving rain were what closed
down the watch early today. Before the rain came however, there were 276
Whimbrels in 4 flocks racing the weather. I wonder what happens when the
rain catches up to them. One would think they would be seen hunkering
down somewhere - big birds on the ground in a big group? Maybe the
reason is as simple as nobody wants to go out to find them when the
weather is that bad. I sure don't.
Other storm racers included 23 White-winged Scoters, a pair of King
Eiders and for the first time in a long while, a flock of 25 Brant seen
by Wayne Renaud.
Tomorrow may offer a bit of respite from the weather so we will be out
at Whimbrel Point to catch the dawn.
If you drive, remember there is a 2 hour limit for parking in the
southernmost lot at Sam Smith park.
Good birding,
Tim
