Since there has been few reports of Rough-legged Hawks this winter I thought I
should share my experience today. As I crawled down Old Perth Road near
Almonte a large shadow cross my view revealing a beautiful Rough-legged Hawk
cruising across the road. He landed in a large tree maybe 50 m from the road
so I pulled over just to enjoy the sight of such a magnificent bird as well as
post it to eBird. After about 5 minutes he swooped down just inside the fence
and made two runs at a rather timorous beastie; a vole I believe but I am not
expert in Rodentia (if that is indeed the correct term)?

The wee beast scurried this way and that and succeeded in escaping to live
another day. The Roughie seemed unperturbed and flew off to the north. Such
are the real day to day events of life for most of the planets species.

Cheers

Iain

Directions

Get to Almonte. Go west as if to Almonte Lagoons on Wolf Grove Road and turn
south on Ramsay 8th. Go south until Old Perth Road and turn right. Look in
the open fields a few hundred meters along both in a the air and on the snow.
Maybe my brave beastie will still be there.
