Highlights: The weather continued to be much milder this week, with a corresponding loss of snow cover from much of the area. Kingston's inner harbour is now almost completely open and the channel to Wolfe Island is beginning to break up. New arrivals continued to push their way in to the area on southerly winds enticing birders out with increasing regularity. Here are the highlights of the last week: SNOW GOOSE - a flock of 168 birds seen just north of Kingston on 20th was the only record this week. CACKLING GOOSE - singles were seen in Kingston on 16th, at Amherstview Sewage Lagoons on 17th, and Wolfe Island on 20th. NORTHERN SHOVELER - Early arrivals (2) were seen at Amherstview Sewage Lagoons on 16th. CANVASBACK - 3-6 birds have been present in Kingston's Inner Harbour since 16th, with 14 there today (22nd). HORNED GREBE - a single bird was present in Kingston's Inner Harbour from 16th-18th. SANDHILL CRANE - 2 birds were seen on Amherst Island on 17th. DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT - there have a few records this week (max 2) but we still await their main arrival. SNOWY OWL - Other than the 7 seen on 18th, only single birds have been seen on Amherst Island this week. There was just one report (of a single bird) from Wolfe Island this week. If you do find one, please keep your distance to reduce negative impacts and always respect private property. PEREGRINE FALCON - Kingston's downtown bird was seen on 2 occasions this week. CAROLINA WREN - a single bird has been fairly regular at a private feeder just north of Kingston all week. EVENING GROSBEAK - Howe Island has been the location for this species this week with up to a maximum of 20 seen today (22nd). Another bird (1) was seen near Brewer's Mills on 20th. COMMON REDPOLL - there appears to be some movement of this species with continued widespread sightings across the region. Up to 300 birds are still being seen at a feeder near Verona. Another 300 were seen on Wolfe Island on 21st. HOARY REDPOLL - a single bird was seen at a feeder on Wolfe Island on 16th. SNOW BUNTING - just 2 birds were seen this week, on Amherst Island, on 18th.
