A big thanks to Chris B, Tom B, Ches C and Su for helping spot and tally the birds today. Weather: Clear blue skies to start and a bit cooler temps. Wind was light from the N for a couple of hours and then we finally got nice cumulus clouds popping up as the thermals started building (the forecast was for (T)hermal (U)pdraft (V)elocity pf 500-600 ft per min which is pretty good). Winds appeared to go a bit NE and picked up in the afternoon before dropping off again later in the day. Raptor Observations: A pretty good flight today and probably one of the better starts to September in several years. The total tally of raptors today was 839... the bulk of which were Broadwings (584), Sharpies (77) and Am. Kestrels (125). There were 8 other species including Osprey (3), Bald Eagle (3 - countable immatures deemed not locals), N. Harrier (26), some juvenile Red-tailed Hawks (12), a few speedy Merlins (6) and then singles of Cooper's Hawk, Peregrine and a bit of a surprise a Red-shouldered Hawk. Non-raptor Observations: Lots of non-raptors today in and around the hawk watch knoll platform... we actually noted 53 species right from where we sat in our chairs! For details of species please see the following eBird Checklist (thanks to Chris B for compiling it today): https://ebird.org/checklist/S193777740 Predictions: Winds are forecast to start NE for Tuesday morning (good foa a bit of an early flight) but are then supposed to swing around to SE which will push the birds inland away from the lake shore and the hawk watch (will basically end the flight ). ======================================================================== Report submitted by Dave Brown ([email protected]) Hawk Cliff Hawkwatch information may be found at: http://www.ezlink.ca/~thebrowns/HawkCliff/index.htm More site information at hawkcount.org: https://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=392 -- Ontbirds and Birdnews are moderated email Listservs provided by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) as a service to all birders in Ontario.
