I upgraded to Karmic this weekend and get a pleasant surprise with BiT. My backups are actually scheduled as root backing up /etc and multiple user's home folder. Under my username I choose the same backup location and add include files for me, but no schedule. This allows BiT to backup all the files it needs and I or any user can restore their own files as needed.
Anyhow, since BiT only ran as root I never saw the notification icon, until Karmic. Now, even though the BiT process is running as root I see a notification icon in my tray... it's pretty cool. Not sure why it happens though, maybe something changed with X? -- "Asking the wrong questions is the leading cause of wrong answers."
