Does anybody know of a good quantitative evaluation of malloc/free cost? I have found a bunch of papers measuring the cost to perform some number of calls to malloc/free. These are mostly microbenchmarks, and their purpose is to compare implementations.
What I want to know is how much of the total execution time of (e.g.) apache or various other programs with large heaps is spent in malloc/free, as compared to the total running time of the program.
