On a point of only mild tangential interest to this thread, I've been
looking carefully at the CLR spec and playing around with a quick and dirty
implementation.

I find it perversely amusing that the absence of unboxed array support in
C# means that safe C# data structures are unable to describe the PECOFF
file format. To do so, the language would require both unboxed array
support and support for arrays with dependent length.
