Just an amusing side comment... The bytecode thing has been interesting for me. I usually find it very difficult to think in my head in terms of graph algorithms. Perhaps oddly, I find it very easy to think in terms of program transformations on the programs corresponding to the NFA.
It's interesting how framing the same problem in a different style can suddenly make it approachable. shap
