Have you considered setting up a wiki instead?

This is a benevolent community, so the structure and controls of cms tools
like drupal are just a hinderance. Cms is for a company trying to enforce
policy decisons through software.

IMO: wiki is a much better fit and the logical counterpart to mailing
lists. The list is the temporal discussion, the wiki is a solidificaion of
those ideas with the most permissive "all hands can contribute" model. This
is how modern companies work internally now (sometimes they use google docs
or sharepoint, but imo wiki works the best)

For running your own wiki, i recommend twiki (more plugins), or Media Wiki
(familiar to most, since it runs wikipedia).

If you want to give it a try without setup or hosting hassle, i recommend
wikia.com for free public wikis, and pbworks for affordable wiki with more
admin control.
