You need an X server to handle the incoming X11 requests.  The forwarding
you see on putty or secureCRT just means that the packets go through the
ssh connection and are therefore encrypted.  You still need an X server to
do anything with them.

There are the commercial solutions...  You can't beat eXceed, but it is
pretty pricey...

What I do when I need something like this in a pinch is grab an Xserver
off of tucows.  There are various shareware ones that work really well for
blasting a terminal back to you, without all the bells a whistles of
eXceed (that you would never use anyway).
