I find the definition of unified messaging to vary platform to platform, I've done a lot of experimentation with all sorts of open source software and made various bits of "glue" to make things to talk to each other, I had a PHP / bash implementation of a msn messenger agent some time ago working which could have been expanded into a command agent for managing servers or used as start to an api for information messaging back to clients.

It might be advantages to get a list of everything as a community that we expect/want to see in a unified communications and computer integrated /symbiont telephony applications.

We can then start making apis that tie into already existing open source projects :). Ive found in the past, your can do nearly anything with *nix and open source without doing extensive amounts of programming its just a matter of finding or creating the glue so to say to stick them all together.

Thanks Phil,

That's exactly what I was thinking about. So, I'm starting to experiment
with Spark and Openfire in the lab and tie it in with an Asterisk box to see
what I can get. If anyone else has done this before, please share.

On another note; has anyone had first-hand experience with Avaya? If so,
please share its advantages or disadvantages over Asterisk.

Thanks,

Keith

Subject: [biz] IM and Asterisk = Unified Communications

I was wondering if anyone has successfully integrated an instant messenger
with Asterisk to create a unified communications solution that can work
with
hard and soft phones yet? I noticed a large ad in a tech magazine for
Microsoft UCS and was wondering if we (the open source community) have
something similar as Microsoft tends to be a follower and open source the
innovator in most cases.

Thanks,
