I'll second that on the Dell switch,

we have one in the office and it has been solid for over 18 months. We don't power any where near 48 devices simultaneously but it drives Cisco, Aastra and Grandstream phones plus a couple of access points and three cameras. The manageability is a huge bonus for visibility of network issues, setting up VLANs and configuring speed/duplex on ports. You could even set up MRTG to monitor performance with next to no effort.
Good value for money.

We also have 6 unmanaged Netgear 16 port switches with 8 powered ports (we use 5) that have been great at the pods. We tried a Linksys/Cisco 8 port first (up to 7W/port IIRC) but the fans are RIDICULOUSLY LOUD. Better suited to the end of a runway at Pearson than an office environment. We can't use it because of the noise.

regards,

Drew

Thanks for following up Martin - good point.

If you are looking for a bit more sophisticated PoE switch with more
power per port - and have a bit more money - you can try Dell:

That is what we usually suggest for clients to get if they can finance it :)

Good luck!

Just a heads up - both these switches do not appear to supply full PoE
power to all ports simultaneously, rather they can supply half the power
(approx 7 watts) to all ports.

Now depending on what phones you use and how many there are, this may or
may not be an issue.

I used the equivalent 48 port Linksys PoE switch recently with about 35
Aastra phones - it wasn't an issue once the phones were up and running,
but if the PoE switch was powered on with all the phones connected
(power failure situation), the simultaneous power draw was too much for
the switch. A large number of phones would not start up or had to be
restarted individually.

Something to keep in mind.

Note, I don't supply any hardware or competing products.

Lloyd,

You can get something like this from Linksys:
http://www.voipgizmos.com/shopexd.asp?id=384

It has 24 ports but simultaneously powers up 12 ports. Price is pretty
affordable.

If you want to power 24 at the same time - you should consider this
one (it is $35+):
