Claude,
I'd agree with Leif - Hylafax running on a Linux platform is a great, reliable platform. If they want to re-use their existing hardware and keep it in-house I believe they would find this a good alternative. One high volume project I set up a couple of years back uses paired PC's (one as a hot backup) with quad port boards from Mainpine and handles some 20,000 pages per week (in and out). For lower volume situations I like using external (serially connected) Multitech faxmodems.

As for outsourced fax solutions, I've used a service that Telus resells, but which is actually Protus (see www.protus.com ) - mostly because when I first got this it was much less expensive for low volume use than getting a dedicated POTS line, and inertia has kept me there.

The one negative with this service has been the maximum speed - when I've tested it in the past their fax modems seemed to be capable of handling only up to 14.4kbps. The Mainpine boards with Hylafax on POTS lines support up to 33.6kbps (and I routinely see 28.8) as well as G3 and G4 fax capabilities.

Another quirk of an outsourced service is that often whole blocks of numbers are fax services. If the sender transposes a digit or hits the key next to the intended one the fax still goes through to someone. I've repeatedly received faxes intended for another business. At least with your own fax the likelihood of a simple error reaching a fax machine is lower, so senders are more likely to realize their error.

I'd be interested in hearing from Leif what performance he sees with the Asterisk interfaces he has used - one POTS interface for Asterisk I looked at explicitly lists 14.4kbps as the maximum speed, others don't seem to state a speed. Are there other choices for Asterisk that support the higher speeds? How about ITSP offerings?

Regards,
Doug.

2009/8/4 Claude Tambu <[email protected]>:
Good morning everyone,

I have a client looking for a fax to email solution for their organization. They currently host in-house (and have tried eFax -- which was so so) and wish to move it to a hosted solution as they're looking for a much reliable solution.

Any recommendations?

Thanks and have a great one!

This may not be what they want, but I've had good luck using hylafax
with Asterisk for the fax-to-email solution. They would simply need to
run their own box in-house (which they may not want to do).

Just an FYI!
