Moving on from this topic but related.

I see that several members of the list are in Canada and elsewhere so I'm not sure how seriously you were affected but after Sept. 11 last year we had several months of pretty much 0 new business and a small but significant percentage of lost business from our customers who were also suffering.  It has gradually picked up but remains very slow.  Our advertising has been completely useless trying several different mediums and approaches.  The only new business we are getting is from an occasional random web signup (maybe from a search engine) and word of mouth/referrals from happy customers and the like.  This is great but not enough to keep us going.

How are you guys who are smaller like me.  Let's say with under 1,000 hosting and/or domain customers.  How are you staying viable?  What are you doing to keep business coming in and increase profits to meet the costs that are constantly increasing?

Regarding the comments below, I know very well how sleezy Verisign is.  I've had the misfortune of dealing with them in at least 4 of their companies.
It brought joy to my heart to hear about the class action lawsuit against them for their sleezy domain practices.  I just hope it goes somewhere and has an impact.

I think some of my comments and questions of been misinterpreted.  I am not a promoter of Verisign or Enom.  I was looking for some reasons to stay with Tucows.  Maybe just a little morale support with a bunch of peers giving examples of why they feel it remains a great company to work with and is worth paying more.  I thought I read somewhere a few months back, that Tucows was going public or had been bought out by someone.  When something like that happens, corporate philosophies are often the first casualty.  I guess I'm just looking for some affirmation that Tucows hasn't "gone Hollywood"

You asked "What distinguishes Tucows these days from Microsoft or
Verisign?"..... have you ever tried to transfer a domain name away from
VeriSign Registrar (Network Solutions) remotely close to the expiry date? I
guess you've never been to http://www.verisignoff.org/ or
