As you probably know, I am an active supporter of true Universal Healthcare.
Last August, the California Legislature passed our landmark bill, SB 840
(Kuehl, D-Santa Monica)- Single Payer Universal Healthcare- and, unwisely,
Governor Schwarzenegger vetoed it. Senator Kuehl reintroduced SB 840 in
February to hundreds of enthusiastic supporters in Sacramento.
We need the new Legislature to pass SB 840 again to send a message to the
Governor that we want REAL universal healthcare with quality and cost controls,
which only SB 840 can provide. We reject handouts to the health insurance
industry pawned off as "universal" healthcare. We will hold our Legislature
accountable.
The Governor heard us because he's proposed his own reform this year, which
will expand access to healthcare by mandating people buy health insurance(he
calls this "universal"). Unfortunately his plan is unenforceable. Since 25%
of drivers do not obey the mandate to buy car insurance, many will not purchase
health insurance which is far more expensive than car insurance. And his plan
has no proven cost controls in it. Many are calling his proposal the PIP

We need our state representatives to endorse SB 840 as the only plan that
provides true universal healthcare and controls healthcare costs. SB 840 is
the gold standard that they must pass. And Schwarzenegger is a populist
governor, which means he can be swayed if enough of us and the Legislature push
him to endorse SB 840.
That's why I am calling on five of my good friends to email a letter to our
local state representatives to endorse SB 840.
I would also ask that you send this letter to five of your good friends. To

The health care crisis is escalating. Studies commissioned by California show
that only the health care plan in SB 840 can achieve high quality universal
health insurance, as well as save money for individuals, families, businesses,
and the state treasury.
SB 840 creates one health insurance plan that covers every California resident.
It guarantees high quality care, comprehensive benefits and choice of your own
personal doctor.
Senator Kuehl developed the California Universal Healthcare Act, with input
from policy experts, health care professionals and citizens like you and me. It
is sound policy that will save billions and make California number one in
quality care.
Health insurance should not be an obstacle to health care. It is time to
deliver that message to the Governor and the Legislature. Please join me in
urging your state representatives immediate endorsement and then ask your
friends to do the same.
