DMN reporter Dianne Solis is tuning into Gretna, La., Spanish-language radio
station KGLA and says the staff there is working hard to urge immigrants to
get out while they can.
Apparently, some immigrants believed rumors that they'd be picked up and
kicked out of the country if they join the evacuation. Maria Jose Bermudez, a
representative of Catholic Charities, went on the air to say federal
authorities
will not check the immigration documents of evacuees.
"If you are afraid to leave because the migra will catch you ... you, this
should not be an obstacle," she said. "Stay calm."
Immigration officials put out a release saying that it has evacuated
detainees from two
locations near New Orleans, but they didn't say to where.
