>From the editors:
The Department of Labor announced this week that the unemployment rate hit a
5-year high of 6.1 percent in August, as companies shed 84,000 jobs from their
payrolls. More than a half-million Americans joined the ranks of the unemployed
last month, bringing the total number to over nine million people.

Of course, there are major differences in the unemployment rate by race. The
rule of thumb is that African American unemployment usually runs at about
double the overall numbers. In August, (seasonally-adjusted) unemployment among
blacks spiked by almost a percentage point -- from 9.7 percent to 10.6 percent
? and is now almost 3 points higher than it was last August.

Those are the top-line numbers ? the ones most-commonly cited in news reports.
A better gauge of the employment situation, I think, can be found in the Bureau
of Labor Statistics' "alternative" measures of unemployment. The "U-6" series,
for example, counts all kinds of people struggling to find work ? "marginally
attached" workers, people who are willing and able to work a full-time job but
are forced to work part-time because of the sluggish economy and people who are
"discouraged" and have given up the job hunt because they haven't been able to
find work for an extended period of time. That number is now 10.7 percent ? an
increase of more than a quarter over last August's numbers.
