A GRACE GIVER OR A GRUDGE BEARER

After Jonah saw the city of Nineveh repent in response to his preaching, he
made this interesting comment, "I knew that You were a gracious and
compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from
sending calamity. Now, O LORD, take away my life, for it is better for me to
die than to live" (Jonah 4:2,3).
Wow! Instead of rejoicing that God is compassionate and forgiving, Jonah goes
into a major sulk. He's upset to the point of wanting to die. Why?
Jonah was eager to accept God's grace for himself and his people. But he was
angry when God extended it to his enemies. I can just hear him say, "It's not
fair! They don't deserve grace!."
Before we judge Jonah too harshly, let's ask ourselves, "Do I pray for my
enemies that they will receive forgiveness or do I secretly wish them
punishment?"
I find non-grace is often easier to give than grace. Do you too? Yet I want to
be a grace giver not a grudge bearer. Grace gives another person freedom to
make mistakes, to grow, to decide, to be who they are, or even to walk out of
my life.
You may be asking, "How can I give grace when non-grace comes naturally?" Here
are a few practical steps:
1. Ask Jesus to do it in you and through you. You cannot do it alone.
2. Fill your mind with Scripture that talks about the grace of God. (Ephesians
1:7, for example)
3. Reflect on how God has shown His grace to you. Has He been patient with you?
Has He forgiven you? After you've blown it, does He not welcome you back?
~ Lord Jesus, help me to release _________ (name him/her) into your loving
hands. I want Your grace and Your love to flow through me to (name him/her.)
