I have found that a chronic cough is most generally a sign of lung worms or
feed that is chopped extremely fine such as corn chops. If the corn is ground
really fine, the dust in the corn will cause them to cough after eating. If
the cough is all the time and not just around dinner time, my first thought
would be to check for lung worm.

One of my sheep is coughing, but it's not a consistent cough. One other
sheep was coughing quite a bit before her, but she stopped. They are all
looking very healthy. My thought it was the dust, it is very dry here on
our place.

I am looking for some help with our ewe. She lambed two days ago in the evening. We put Mama and baby ( a strong healthy guy) in the lambing jug then in the morning she had what seemed afterbirth hanging out still. We gave some gentle tugs but it did not come. We called the vet and they said to wait and it should come by itself. The next day it was still there, the vet gave us antibiotics and we began to think she might have a lamb still in there. Next day, she was off her feed and would not let her lamb nurse anymore. She seemed very sick and listless. It seems there is a lamb still in her at least we can feel a mass in her belly. We went in to feel around but the cervix was so tight and closed we could not get a hand in to feel for a lamb. We were able to gently work the cervix to get all 5 fingers in but after over an hour were not able to get a fist through. She seemed to be in so much pain we stopped trying.
So is there anything else we can do or does she need to be put down? Is there anything else that could cause her to act so sick? We have never had anything like this before. The vet is not very helpful, their first interest is cattle in this part of the country.
Thanks
Chris

Chris:
Sounds like you definitely have a lamb left there. There is a shot you can
give to cause labor pains. I do not know what the name is, but it is the same
for cattle. Your vet should have it. This should enlarge the cervix, if not
there are some drugs that will relax the cervix. Again, your vet should be
able to help. If not, find another vet sympathetic to sheep. A lot of times a
small animal vet will be more help than a large with sheep. You need to act
fast, as toxins are building and she will not last long. Try an emergency vet
clinic if possib le.

If you can get her cervix relaxed, you will have to reach in there and get
the lamb. You will have to know a little anatomy by feel, and it helps to have
small hands.

The medicine to make her go back into labor and push everything out is
'oxytocin' - they use this on cattle all the time and the vet should have given this
to her immediately when she had not passed that afterbirth after a couple of
hours. If you are successful in getting the other baby out, she then needs
heavy antibotics both systematically and infused into her cervix
(oxytetracycline (sp?) ) is excellent for this infusion. You use a large syringe with a
'straw' made to go on the end of the syringe - again, this is done in cattle all
the time and your vet should do this and/or show you how to do it. Doing it
one time will not be enough, it will have to be done over several days, every
day.

The next thing I would suggest is to get a new vet.

good luck!!

Dear Friend.

I am Mr Joseph Mbosowo the eldest son of Mr Edward Mbosowo from
Sierra Leone. I am writing you in absolute confidence primarily to seek your
assistance to transfer our cash of Twenty five Million and five hundred
thousand Dollars ($25,500.000.00) now in the custody of a private Security
trust firm in Europe the money is in trunk boxes deposited and declared as
Precious stones by my late father as a matter of fact the company does not
know the content as money, although my Father made them to understand that
the boxes belongs to his foreign partner.

Source of the money:

My late Father Chief Michael Mbosowo is a native of Mende tribe in the
Northern province of Sierra Leone, was the General Manager of Sierra Leone
Mining co-operation (S.L.M.C.) Freetown . According to my Father this money
was the income accrued from Mining Co-operation's over draft and minor
sales.

Before the peak of the civil war between the rebels forces of Major Paul
Koroma and the combined forces of ECOMOG peace keeping operation that almost
destroyed my country, following the forceful removal from power of the
civilian elected President Ahmed Tejan Kabbah by the rebels. My Father had
already made arrangement for his family to be evacuated to Ivory coast with
the CERTIFICATE OF DEPOSIT he made with a security firm in Europe through
the aid of U.N evacuation team.

During the war in my country and following the indiscriminate looting of
Public and Government properties by the rebel forces, the Sierra Leone
mining coop. Was one of the target looted and it was destroyed. My Father
including other top Government functionaries were attacked and killed by the
rebels in November 2000 because of his relationship with the civilian
Government of Ahmed Tejan Kabbah.

As a result of my fathers death and with the information we got that the
rebels are out for us the burden became too much for me to handle coupled
with the ill health of my mother she died in the process as I could not
afford her a decent medical care. The unrest in Ivory Coast and the threat
from the rebels against our lifes, made us to be evacuated to Nederland last
December where I and my family are seeking political asylum, we are at
present in an asylum camp in a small village in Nederland(HOLLAND). Our only
hope now is in you and the boxes deposited in the Security Firm To this
effect, humbly solicit your assistance in the followings ways.

 1. to assist me claim this boxes from the security Firm as our Foreign
partner

 2. to transfer this money (USD$25.5 M) in your name to your country

 3. to make a good arrangement for a joint business investment on our
behalf in your country and you, our Adviser/ Manager.

For your assistance, I have decided that 20% of the total amount will be
for your effort and another 5 % to cover all the expenses that may incur
during the business transaction, Last, I urge you to keep this transaction strictlyconfidential as no one knows our where
about. Please as you show your willingness, Forward to me your full name,
address and Tel/ Fax numbers, to me via my private email, and I will get
back to you immediately with more information's and subsequently send
you the necessary documents needed in this transaction.

May God bless you as you assist us.

 Mr Joseph Mbosowo.

For confidentiality sake please reach me on this email.

oxytocin (hormone) ours is double strength and we give 1 - 1 1/2 cc to a 100 lb dog........it induces labor check with an animal doctor regular vet...It's for uterine inertia. I use it when I think there is still a pup in there. It can not be used when there is a pup still in the birth canal. I get my meds from a regular vet. I call her if I am in doubt. You should be able to find a vet who will work with you. I have seen our vet reach in and pull out a goat that was to big for a first time mamma. The osytocin causes labor. We are blessed with a local small animal vet who also does large animals, farm calls and has lots of experience.

Hi Carlos,

Ewes cycle every 17 days. To ensure that a ewe is bred, it is a good idea to keep the ram in for at least 17 x 2 = 34 days. This way, if a ewe is just completing a cycle when you put in the ram, 17 days later the ram will still be there when she comes into estrous again.

You can breed any time. I suggest you do it for YOUR convenience, not the ewe's. Have a look at the breeding/lambing chart on my Web site at http://www.critterhaven.biz/breeding_schedule.htm to help you select a good breeding date.

Carlos, if you are talking Barbado sheep, then anytime is as good a time
as any other. What I mean is figure out 5 1/2 to 6 months from, say
August 1, to the second or third week of February, as pregnancy length.
Then figure out the average weather in your area, Arcadia, Fla. Which,
if my memory serves me correctly, is not a really good month in Florida.
Unless you plan on monitoring them constantly at the end of 5
months,(since I assume you haven't had lambs before, and are
inexperienced at this) or have a barn and small lot to fence them in . I
would go for Sept. , because March is a lot nicer weather wise. That way
you have all lambs in 2-4 weeks, and all of them will be weaned by May
and if, and that's a big if, you wish to breed again, then you can
again., and will have your second lambing in September. But I like to
wait and figure out a good time period for rest and recuperation for my
ewes. I sometimes have two lambings a year, but not every year. (not
that they are not ready and willing) It is important that the ewes get
their health and weight back up before they are bred again. JMHO. As to
one week for the Ram,that is dependent on how many ewes you have. If
they are not in season when he comes in the herd then it may take that
week for them to get there. I leave mine in there for at least one
month. Actually, since I have my own ram I leave him in with them until
the lambing season gets close, then I remove him to his own pasture, so
the ewes can get calmed down before delivery. (about the fourth month)
That way if there are any late bloomers they get bred, too. Just makes it
interesting when you look out your door and see "Oops! Surprise! A late
lamb."
Remember to remove all new ram lambs as soon as they are weaned, or they
will try and sometimes succeed breeding to sisters and mothers. Any ewe
lambs should be put in a seperate pen until after the Ram is removed
from the second breeding too.

Another consideration is when is the best time to sell the lambs - Easter and
Christmas time - so you may want to time the breeding so the lambs are market
age/size by those dates. If you have a market year round, then you won't
have to worry about that; our best time is Easter and prices rise in the weeks
preceeding Easter and fall sharply after.
