Hi folks,
I am searching for people who breed polled barbados blackbellies and who
have records proving that when bred to polled stock, their rams and/or ewes
will consistently produce polled lambs.
There are only 18 breeders of polled blackbellies listed in the BBSAI
registry (as of June 2002), and of those, only 8 or so are currently active
breeders.
There are only 14 polled registered rams who are currently breeding or have
had sons who have been registered. I'm not sure how many of them are still
alive. Those 14 polled rams belong to 7 registered breeders.
Out of more than 500 registered animals, this is an alarmingly low number
of polled rams. Of the 8 or so polled breeders, most of us now have animals
that are related to each other, having originated from either Claude
Hughes' flock or Charles Beam's flock (and Charles got his ram from Hughes,
too.)
So I need to find more of you polled blackbelly breeders. I want to learn
more about your sheep and be able to confidently refer you to people who
ask me to help them find breeders of polled blackbellies. I want to get a
better "big picture" of where the polled bloodlines are. I also am
personally looking to purchase another polled ram and have another buyer
wanting a polled ram unrelated to the ewes she is purchasing from me. I
would like to help us work together to diversify our genetic pool and keep
our bloodlines from totally disappearing.
