Peter Schroedter - Manitoba, Canada
Peter started with sheep in 1974 and bought his first sheep in 1976. He has
been involved with sheep ever since. Peter spent a year working as a
stockman on a west Australian property looking after 9000 sheep. He spent 15
seasons traveling and shearing in Manitoba as well as three seasons in
Australia, New Zealand and the American southwest, as well as a shearing
trip to Scotland. The traveling allowed him to bring home ideas from all
over the world and try them out on his own flock. It also showed him what
sheep production system had the best chance of long term viability with a
good measure of economic success.
Peter works in partnership with his wife Linda; she's the rancher and
together they have built their flock from 200 to 500 and finally to 1000
ewes and 30 cows on 1200 acres. Their goal was to build a low labor, low
cost, low stress sheep production system with enough economic strength to
earn a teacher's income equivalent. Linda manages the day-to-day operation
while Peter pitches in to help with the marketing, feed purchasing and
overall program development.
In addition to sheep ranching, Peter has earned his way as a newspaper
reporter, published a sheep and beef magazine and written sheep production
columns for more than 10 years. He also has an interest in a small logging
firewood operation and a water trough manufacturing business.
During the winter Peter spends most of his time writing. He has written the
book "More Sheep, More Grass, More Money", which is an entertaining,
informative primer on turning consistent profits raising sheep without
working yourself to exhaustion. It's a blend of humorous observation and
practical advice. The book covers everything from pasture and stock
management to sheep nutrition, guard dogs and many other areas of sheep
production.
