First Spooner Sheep Dairy Day After 50 years of uninterrupted Spooner Sheep Days, the traditional field day is taking a dairy twist. The first Spooner Sheep Dairy Day will be held at the UW-Madison's Spooner Ag Research Station on Saturday, August 23 from 8 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. While the program will be of particular interest to present and prospective dairy sheep producers, all sheep producers and others are invited to attend.
The Spooner Ag Research Station, located at W6646 Highway 70 just east of Spooner, is home to an increasing amount of research on dairy sheep and milk production, and organizers said it seems natural that a field day focused solely on dairy sheep be held to respond to the specific needs of this industry. Current plans are for the traditional Spooner Sheep Day to be held on an alternating-year basis with the new Spooner Sheep Dairy Day. Therefore, the 51st Spooner Sheep Day, covering all aspects of sheep production, will be held again in 2004. The program topics and speakers for the Spooner Sheep Dairy Day are: - Testing of milk production and calculation of milk yield Yves Berger, Superintendent, Spooner Ag Research Station; and Dave Thomas, UW-Madison professor of animal sciences - Milking equipment and its maintenance Yves Berger - Comparison of East Friesian, Dorset and Lacaune crossbred ewes for milk production Chris Schneider, UW-Madison graduate research assistant - Electronic identification and its applications for testing of milk production Yves Berger and Dave Thomas - Pasture walk, Kura clover Ken Albrecht, UW-Madison agronomist - Update on crossbreeding program and feeding of ewe lambs Dave Thomas - Discussion between producers of milking techniques in the milking parlor Attendance at the Spooner Sheep Dairy Day is free, but there is a charge for the noon lamb barbecue. A lamb barbecue luncheon is $5 for those who pre-register or $10 at the door.
