Hello List,

I guess I should give my 2 cents worth. I have sheep and goats and my goats
have horns. I use to have collars and small bells on all my goats and
sheep. I really liked the sound of all the bells when they would run. The
problem I have found with collars and horns is that when they are playing
and/or fighting the horns can sometimes slip between the collar and the
animals. If this happens the horn can twist the collar making it tighter
causing the collared animal to choke and die. I had this happen to 2 of my
goats. Since then I have taken all my collars off. Of course if all your
animals are polled, collars should be fine but if you have any horned
animals there is always a chance of an accident. Just food for thought!

Subject: [blackbelly] Ear Tagging

We have had some difficulty also with tags ripping from the ears. We have
started to use collars with numbers also to identify the ewes. We were
thinking that maybe instead of ear tags that the government could supply
tags with the number for tracking on a plastic or metal tag that we could
put on along with their number tag. Then they wouldn't have to have their
ears tagged and they would still have the number with each individual sheep.

Was an idea - whether it would be acceptable or not I don't know.I'm sure
they feel that they could easily be removed from1 sheep to another. Even if
we could use the small metal tags from like Premier in the ear and have the
tag on the collar too. Our ewes are 1 1/2 to 2 years old and still wear
their collars. That's so we know which is which. The ewes don't mind the
collars either and it makes it somewhat helpful to have something to grab if

they need to be caught for some reason. Let me know what you think of the
idea. Sue and Ted Miller
