I've purchased 4 crossbred bb with kat. and they have larger hind quarters than the BB. I have ewes- cross kat/bb, bbwest affrican and will be getting pure bb all to cross with the pure bred katahdin. Comparisons among the lambs will made and results will be shared,
What arrangements can be made for sheep breeders to obtain breeding stock from each other??

I have been very happy with our straight-bred BB. We have a 50"tall field
fencing with a hot wire running inside it (at about 36" height). We work our
Border Collie on the sheep and they have never offered to jump the fence to get
away. Once they get used to you, Barbs are easy to handle (lightweight!) and
seem to have a little more on the ball mentally. When we had woolies, if the
weather turned windy or rainy, they would just stand out there and get
wet--hence, lots of upper respiratory stuff would start. The Barbs head straight for
the barn in inclement weather. Have had almost no health problems
whatsoever. I like these guys!

I live here in SW Idaho, and know of a few people who raise Dorpers. In
regards to heat tolerance, they do okay here when temps get to 106 degrees (altho
it is a very dry heat) so think they might be okay for you!

I agree, the Blackbelly ewes look pretty small compared to others! Ours
average about 80-90 lbs or so, with a couple a little larger than that. We do
have one that we call our"dwarf" who is only about 50 lbs. Our ram is about 130
lbs, so even he is not very big. The nice thing is that they are small enough
that I can handle them without needing my husband's help all the time!

Rick, I have a 75% dorper ram from Kathy Lewis, and I have 5 ewes of her breeding and am buying six more in December. She breeds white dorper/st croix. I've got a new place, new husband too. I will call you. Lissa
