In last months (November 2003) issue of the BBSAI Newsletter Joshua Weimer, President of the BBSAI states why the Association is called Blackbelly Barbados Sheep Association. Below is the article. Why Are We Named Blackbelly Barbados Sheep Association International? The Blackbelly Barbados Sheep Association International was founded in January of 1996 by Charles Beam of Newalla, Oklahoma, with the help of Rudy Crawford of Lexington, Oklahoma. Charles and Rudy felt as though they needed to differentiate the association from the association that was already in existence on the island of Barbados. Therefore they named the association the Blackbelly Barbados Sheep Association instead of the Barbados Blackbelly Sheep Association. Not long after its inception, it became apparent that the association had a need to become an international association, so in 1998 we became the Blackbelly Barbados Sheep Association International. By Joshua Weimer All other times I usually use the term Barbados Blackbelly even when referring to Barbado. I know by doing this, it is not correct. Yes, I agree the polled Barbados Blackbelly are a lot less in population than the Barbado. I also have the polled Barbados Blackbelly like Carol. I like the Barbado very much and they are a VERY impressive animal but I am trying to do my part in conserving the Barbados Blackbelly and not the Barbado. As the Virginia Regional Director of BBSAI I feel all registered animals are created equal, meaning in this position I should represent both equally. Was that on purpose? I believe the blackbelly association includes all animals whether Barbado or Barbados Blackbelly, correct? And I'm also curious if you know whether the association for the conservancy of rare and endangered farm animals (sorry I forgot their name) lumps the Barbado and Barbados Blackbelly together? I'm suspecting that there is a very large number of (horned) Barbado in the US, and a really minute number of (polled) Barbados Blackbelly. Agree? There is probably such a discrepancy in the two populations that YOU have to lump them all together? Carol wrote the other day that she is trying her best to keep the two breeds apart, and we all have to help her!
