I read the article Carol posted. Interesting. We have been told by the local
lamb plant just over the border in Iowa, that they will dock us money due to
the hides not being worth anything. My husband is also a taxidermist. We
have sent Barbados hides to be tanned for the past 3 years.We have not had
ANY trouble getting them sold. One fella bought some and took them to a
local nursing home as lap blankets and they are WARM. We have never had a
skin tanned into leather - we've always had them tanned with the hair on.
The next time we have hides to send I may just have to try having them made
into leather and see for myself how they are. There has to be a market
somewhere for them but I think they were right in saying that it's just very
new. CArol, where could I get in touch with someof these people that have
applied for this USDA grant? Would be interested in conversing with them
