We live in North TX. We also raise Blackbelly Barbados, and yesterday morning one of our Ewe's had twin lambs. We do have a 4000 sq ft barn with horse stalls. Out in the pasture we keep a Great Pyrenees livestock guardian dog, and a German Rottweiller which keep an eye on our sheep and goats. By late evening I was able (with a neighboring rancher's help) to get the twins and momma into a locked in stall. This morning I went out to feed all of them, and here was a dead coyote that had jumped the fence. The two dogs were laying outside the stall as if protecting their babies. My Rottie was covered in blood, and from all appearances had eaten quite a bit of the coyote. My Great Pyr was very white and clean & quite hungry for her breakfast. All the chickens were fine, all the goats were fine.
After this experience I cannot recommend too highly having protective dogs for any & all livestock. I always feed my dogs high quality food and eggs. All I can figure is that if a Rottweiller will protect your animals this well, maybe it is better than any of the known LGD's I have heard of.
