We haven't had a problem. Sandy Please anyone, I'd appreciate your thoughts on this issue. How many of you go through a 2-week restricted diet/water ritual to prepare ewes for weaning? Is it really necessary with Barbados? ________________________________________________________________ The best thing to hit the Internet in years - Juno SpeedBand! I have had no problems. I think that blackbellies are less prone to mastitis than woolie sheep. We don't change their rations unless we see they aren't eating as much. We have cut back on grain right now cause the weather has warmed up some. They seem to want hay more at the moment so that's what they are eating. We have always just removed the young 'uns from their moms and we have only had mastitis once. We felt that it was caused that time cause we left the lambs on mom too long as they were really beating her to suck - lifting her back end off the ground at times. This is what we do and you asked so I responded. Would that cut down her milk production some instead of taking both off cold turkey? I used to have Border Cheviots and they only singled for me. This year I am anticipating some twins as I now have hair sheep. I was thinking I might try this. The only trouble I've ever had was when I once tried to remove the lambs from their moms--they immediately jumped the fences to get back to their moms! Isn't it fun how things run in streaks. One year you get mostly rams; another year more ewes. And this week I've had three sets of twins--each pair being one boy and one girl! Date: Thu, 19 Feb 2004 22:44:38 -0600 Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Mary, We have never worried about weaning our lambs. We just let them, the ewes do it as if they were in the wild or with the ram lambs, take them away at 3 months, sometimes 3 1/2 months. The ewes don't seem to mind it at all. We do have a couple that will bleat and hang around the rams pen for a few days, but then they just go off in their own little world and do their own little thing about getting back on their feet and enjoying life.
