Jen, it is common to wean lambs between 60 and 90 days. Depends on how many lambs and what the ewe's condition is. I like to leave the lambs on for 90 days if possible. However, if a lamb's bag butting is lifting the ewe off the ground, it's time to wean. This is also the reason why I don't believe it is a good idea to leave the lambs on and let the ewe wean them herself.

My ewes will breed back at 60 days after lambing. They can conceive even while continuing to nurse. However, I am not that much in a hurry and like to give the ewes a break.

Also, I have learned the hard way that ewe lambs and ram lambs are very fertile as early as 4 months old. If you wean at 90 days, make sure that the ewe lambs and ram lambs are separated from potential mates.

At what age are you weaning your lambs?
How soon after a ewe lambs does she come into heat? Does it depend on how long she nurses?
